Reimagining a 1990s Home for Modern Living

Project Overview

Built in the 1990s, this Northwest Portland home offered generous square footage, strong architectural bones, and abundant natural light. Over time, however, the main living spaces had begun to feel disconnected from one another and no longer reflected the character the homeowners envisioned for the house.

Evergreen’s design-build team was brought in to reimagine the kitchen, living room, and family room, while also coordinating with the Evergreen roofing team on a full roof replacement. The goal was to create a warmer, more cohesive home with craftsmanship and materials that would stand the test of time.

Consistency Through Material Choice

Rift white oak appears throughout the home, tying together the kitchen, family room, coffee station, library, and custom architectural details. Repeated thoughtfully from room to room, the material creates continuity while allowing each space to maintain its own identity.

The kitchen pairs clean-lined white oak cabinetry with Della Terra Ivory White quartz countertops, creating a bright and welcoming space that feels both contemporary and timeless. Large windows bring in natural light, while carefully considered storage and workspace planning support the needs of everyday life.

In the adjacent family room, a custom coffee station serves as both a functional amenity and a visual anchor. Extending beyond the cabinetry, Evergreen crafted a dramatic wood feature wall defined by a series of intersecting arches and vertical slat detailing. More than a decorative element, the composition reflects the homeowners’ background as mathematicians. The spacing and rhythm of the arches were developed in collaboration with the family, with the curvature and wavelength carefully considered to create a pattern that feels balanced and uniquely personal.

A New Focal Point for the Living Room

One of the most dramatic transformations took place in the living room. Custom millwork surrounds a striking fireplace clad in Bedrosians Malibu White ledger stone, creating an architectural centerpiece that anchors the room.

Arched detailing, integrated shelving, and carefully considered proportions elevate the feature wall beyond simple built-ins. Painted in Benjamin Moore’s Lichen Stone, the room balances warmth and sophistication while providing space for books, collected objects, plants, and family photos.

One Team, One Vision

Whole-home renovations involve hundreds of decisions, multiple trades, and careful coordination across every phase of construction. Working with a single design-build team allowed the homeowners to move through the process with one point of contact and a unified vision from concept through completion.

As the homeowner shared:

“I especially appreciate [Evergreen’s] experience and ability to find the right people for the job, being a single point of contact and taking the management of the individual teams out of my view. Their design creativity and attention to my family wishes all joined together with the meticulous craftsmanship converged to a finished space in which we are happy to find ourselves every day now and on.”

The Result

Today, the home feels markedly different from the house built three decades ago. Natural materials, custom craftsmanship, and a cohesive design language bring a sense of warmth and permanence to the remodeled spaces. From the kitchen and coffee station to the living room, family room, and new roof, every element contributes to a home that feels thoughtfully considered and beautifully connected.
