Transforming a Galley Kitchen into an Open, Refined Living Space
Many older homes were designed with separate rooms for cooking, dining, and entertaining. While that worked well decades ago, today’s homeowners often want connected spaces that make everyday living and gathering more natural.
That was exactly the challenge with this Beaverton home.
The house featured beautiful Northwest architecture, including vaulted ceilings, expansive windows, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. But a compartmentalized floor plan prevented those features from working together. A narrow galley kitchen, enclosed dining room, and separated living spaces limited both the home’s functionality and its sense of openness.
Rather than simply updating finishes, Evergreen’s design-build team began by rethinking how the home functioned.
Creating an Open Floor Plan
The homeowners wanted a kitchen that felt like the center of the home instead of a room tucked away from daily life.
To accomplish that, Evergreen relocated a load-bearing wall, extended the roof trusses, and installed a new structural beam. These structural improvements made it possible to open the kitchen, dining area, and family room into one connected living space while maintaining the home’s structural integrity.
The result is a floor plan that improves sightlines, encourages conversation, and allows natural light to flow throughout the home.
A Modern Northwest Design with Mid-Century Influence
With the new layout established, the design focused on warmth, natural materials, and clean architectural lines.
A generous island now anchors the kitchen, creating a welcoming space for cooking, entertaining, and everyday living. Walnut cabinetry adds warmth and texture, complemented by painted cabinetry in Sherwin-Williams Natural Tan. Pentalquartz Cashmere Taj countertops provide soft movement, while the deep green Yakasumi tile backsplash from United Tile introduces richness and contrast. Champagne bronze Gibson hardware by Elements completes the understated material palette.
Throughout the remodel, subtle mid-century influences complement the home’s original Northwest character without competing with it.
Details That Connect the Space
One of the defining features of the remodel is its attention to architectural detail.
Custom slatted wood dividers provide visual separation while maintaining an open and airy feel. In the adjoining family room, the existing stove-style fireplace was replaced with a streamlined gas fireplace, clad in Bluerun tile from Bedrosians. The new fireplace creates a clean architectural focal point that complements the surrounding materials while giving the space a warmer, more contemporary feel.
Wide-plank French oak flooring from California Classics flows throughout the remodeled living areas, tying the kitchen, dining room, and family room together into one cohesive design.
The existing skylights and walls of glass already brought abundant natural light into the home. The remodel embraced those strengths with a restrained material palette and thoughtfully layered lighting that enhances the home’s architecture throughout the day and into the evening.
