How to clean an asphalt roof

Owning an asphalt shingle roof comes with challenges. Asphalt is preferred for shingles by many homeowners due to the look, durability, and style of asphalt shingles. These types of roofs may need to be cleaned more often than roofs made of other materials. Especially if you live in a humid location, asphalt roofs can respond differently compared to drier climates. Thoroughly cleaning your asphalt roof periodically may be necessary to get rid of any dirt, debris, mold, or other accumulation.

Preparing to Clean Your Asphalt Roof

Cleaning your asphalt roof will require some preparation. You will want to make sure you have the ability and means to reach your roof safely. If your roof is excessively steep or you are not comfortable getting up on to your roof to clean it, it is recommended to call a professional. If, however, you are able to clean your asphalt roof safely then you will need to choose the right product first.

Bleach is not recommended, since products containing bleach or mixed solutions with bleach can lighten or damage your roof. Additionally, runoff from the bleach may leak off your roof and onto one’s grass or plants. Using products that contain sodium hydroxide or lye are recommended instead. These products are less harmful to plants, but are still corrosive enough to take care of any stains. A garden hose will also be helpful in order to quickly wash away the solution and get rid of stains more effectively.

Once you have chosen a product, make sure you are prepared to take the proper safety measures. You will likely need to wear protective gear to protect your skin and airway, regardless of the product you are using. You may also need a harness in order to make sure you are strapped to the roof in the event of a fall.

Cleaning Your Asphalt Roof

Before you begin, be sure to remove any items surrounding the outer edge of your home. Lawn furniture, toys, and plants, if possible, should be moved out of the way. Runoff from the solution you use to clean your asphalt shingles could potentially damage items or plants near your home.

Next, depending on the product you have chosen, follow the instructions to make sure your solution is properly mixed. You may need to mix your solution with water in order to dilute it. You will also need to water down the shingles on your roof before applying the solution. This will help the solution to penetrate the shingles and keep it from evaporating too quickly.

After you have prepared your cleaning solution and rinsed off your roof shingles, spray the cleaner onto your roof and allow it to sit. Wait 20 minutes or so before rinsing it off, depending on the product you are using. Follow the instructions for the solution you are using closely, as wait times may vary or you may have additional steps to take.

Once the allotted time has passed, use a power washer or a garden hose to rinse off the solution. Be sure to take your time and thoroughly rinse off all the cleaning product from your roof’s shingles.

After Cleaning Your Asphalt Roof

Once you have completed the cleaning process, you will want to take one more step. Preventing mold or dirt from clinging to your asphalt roof in the future will require you to spray a stain-blocking solution on your shingles just after you have cleaned it. This will prevent any regrowth from coming back for quite some time.
