Modern, Eclectic, and Guest-Ready: A One-of-a-Kind ADU in North Portland

When a Portland couple found themselves in need of more space for visiting friends and family, they faced a decision: remodel their basement, move to a larger house, or try something different. Ultimately, building a detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) offered the flexibility they needed without compromising their current home.

A Flexible Space for Guests, and More

The finished ADU provides a dedicated bedroom and bathroom for out-of-town visitors, along with a second room that doubles as a home office. Designed to be both functional and personal, the space fits seamlessly into the homeowners’ daily lives while offering privacy and comfort for their guests.

Collaborative Design with Character

The homeowners brought a unique design perspective to the project, and Evergreen’s design-build team embraced it. “They were receptive to our weird ideas,” the homeowners said. “And the people working at the house were really nice, and of course, hard-working.”

That creative partnership shines through in the details. The bathroom features a striking mix of tile from Florida Tile’s “Storied” collection: Indigo Blue and Saffron Yellow on the shower walls, and Z Collection’s Concrete Natural Black tile on the floor, creating a rich, layered look. In the kitchen, Cinnamon-toned backsplash, also from Florida Tile, adds warmth and texture, while a Waiss Black countertop and Kraus Britt pull-down faucet offer sleek contrast. Cabinet hardware from Jeffrey Alexander’s Mirada collection adds just the right touch of polish.

Throughout the home, saturated paint colors reflect the homeowners’ bold aesthetic. From the deep Lafayette Green walls in the great room to the Autumn Orange and Marooned tones in the studio, every room feels intentional, vibrant, and alive.

A Custom Build that Reflects the Owners’ Personality

By working closely with the homeowners and staying open to nontraditional ideas, Evergreen created an ADU that feels fresh, fun, and completely tailored. “We love the strange shape of the building, the colors, the tiles, and the modernness of it all,” they shared. “Everything is new and stylish, but our eccentricities are apparent.”

It’s not just a place for guests to stay, it’s a space that reflects the spirit and style of the people who built it.
