Are you curious about the different parts of your roof and how they function? Roofs are made of more than just shingles and wood. Below you will find descriptions of the most basic components used to create roofs and protect your home and loved ones.
Shingles
You likely have seen many different kinds of shingles and roof coverings. Shingles are made using a variety of materials and depending on your location, one type of shingle might be better to choose over another. Some shingle materials will be more expensive but will also be more resilient to weather damage.
Starter Strips
Starter strips are used by roofing installers to not only help the shingles lay properly around the edges of the roof, but to also help control moisture and weather-related damage. Starters are often necessary to keep water out, so you definitely want to make sure they are installed on your roof.
Vents
As with most roof parts, vents help control moisture. Since heat rises into attics and upper levels, having vents on your roof can help control this excess heat that may rise into these spaces. As long as vents on one’s roof have flashing, vents are very effective at allowing air to circulate properly without allowing rain, insects, or other elements to enter into your home.
Flashing
Flashing is necessary around vents, sunroofs, and seams on your roof. You may also have heard flashing referred to as trim. Flashing reinforces edges that may be prone to leaks. They provide an extra barrier against rain, snow, and wind. Some flashing material may also help divert rainwater towards roof gutters.
Dormers
Dormers are structured elements that add design and dimension to one’s home. They usually stick out of one’s roof by several feet and have a window placed on them. Dormers help to not only make one’s home look more unique, but they also let in light to the upper levels of one’s home.
Water or Moisture Barrier
If you live in an area that receives especially heavy rain or snow, it is necessary for your roof to have a moisture or water barrier. These barriers sit between the decking of your roof and the underlayment. In order to prevent water damage and leaks during inclement weather, moisture barriers are necessary.
Gutter Protection
Gutters themselves are always necessary on roofs, but so are gutter protectors. Gutter protection helps to help debris out of your gutters. If any kind of build-up occurs in your gutters, this can cause damage to your roof and to the gutters themselves. Make sure your gutters are kept free of leaves, sticks, and other natural items in order to help protect your roof.
Roof Truss
The basic structure of your roof is known as the roof truss and is made up of two parts. The first is the rafters, which are the sloping beams that connect to one another from the bottom to the top of the roof. The second part is known as the ridge. The ridge sits at the top of the roof’s rafters and runs the length of the roof.
